Poetry day!

Hi everyone! Now I am going to talk about what we have done during the half group with Raquel.

Well, the day started with a new tool on the tables, a new Samsung Tab, we have never used it before. It was motivating have activities like this. We were divided in five each group more or less.

The topic was the poetry, how can we teach? Can we develop the contents with the poetry? I don’t use to read poetry and I never thought before to use poetry to teach, so I was very expectation to see how develops the class, because when someone say poetry I can imagine some rappers that they do with music, but I didn’t know how to develop in class.

At the beginning we were watching some videos about poetry in class, and then we had to write the main ideas in the sheets that we had (one thing that I missed it was to have a scaffolding to know what we had to write in the sheets, and other thing was to have an assessment to know that the things what we wrote was good or bad). With these videos my mind start to open because, we could see that poetry is a tool that we can use in class, the children can enjoy too much, and also the poetry can give to them the capacity to imagine place or moment to and also to develop their vocabulary.

After this activity Raquel gave us a little sheet with a little poetry that we have learnt, and then we have create choreography like a dance to teach for the students and make easer to them the poetry.

You can see here what we have done in class: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UIB4egl7Fw

To end the class we have used the Samsung Tab to see different and funny activities to have enjoyed and learn with the poetry. One of the activities that I liked too much was one that you have only to write some verbs that you like, some nouns and pronouns, and the program create for you, your own poem.

I would like to say that I have never thought about poetry in class because my teachers never used with me, but my mind changes and I saw that poetry is a powerful tool to develop in class.  Also we can use music to develop different intelligences and make it more funny.

  1. Hi Alvaro! I’m glad to see that someone talks about this funny lesson. For me was a lesson very useful to open my mind in the sense that I never thought before about poetry like something important in the classroom. It was something that you hear but you don’t care about that. In my opinion the poetry develop too many skills; Poetry should be one of the educational resources for excellence with children, which encourage many values necessary for a correct and comprehensive development of children. While they are growing we should to use poetry as well, because we must also promote auditory memory, visual, rhythmic.
Also I have to say you thank a lot to give us that wonderful link where we can see our amazing work with the poetry; I think that I have lost all the shame I had when I started the uni. And now, I know I’m going to try to include poetry in my future class, we don’t have to be scared about try this kind of things, sometimes It will be great and sometimes it will be a disaster, but we are new in this world and the most important thing is to be courageous in this adventure.

  2. Hi Alvaro. I agree with you when you said that, with this lesson, we can imagine how to teach poetry. I think that we have to improve the way to teach this topic, because the way we learnt it in our school period was so basic and unpleasant, only with memorizing.
Like you I never thought that poetry can be used in class as a tool to encourage the students to learn more about the benefits of the poetry for the learning process.
Not only poetry in Spanish, but also in English could be beneficial for ouw future students, because the poetry makes you think in a totally different way than you are used to. And also the skills that you are going to achieve are different with learning poetry and do not learn it.
Obviously the activities are so funny but if I have to choose my favorite I would select the poetry in storytelling way, where we have to teach a poem with gestures and movements. It was very funny also the making off and the moment that we have to record it. With the recording of this activity we can also have a view of us nowadays and compare it with the first videos where we had to appear making this kind of things.
