The Fairytale Characters Creation Activity:

With this post I want to share with you my opinion about the activity that we have done in the last seminars about the creation of a fairytale character.

This seminar made me think about how we can apply this activity in our future classes. In my opinion this is a potential activity to know better our students and how do they think.

The creation of a fairytale character could be a beneficial activity to improve the communication between teachers and students, considering that the teacher will be able to see how are the self-esteem of each child and they may use this activity to take full of the possible potential of each student.

This activity could be done at the first days of the course, when the teachers do not have so much information to know the type of students they will teach. It takes all the week.

-To begin with the activity the teacher will have to explain the different roles that have each character in the story, because it does not symbolize the same things a character who plays as a hero than another who plays as a wizard, or a villain.

-To continue with the activity we could make a kind of test, but with some familiar characters of the popular children stories and try to identify the meaning of each one. With this first part of the activity the teacher catch the attention of the students and can carry out the second part of the activity.

-On the second part of the activity children will have to create a character that they deem appropriate to make a reflection of themselves, either a prince, a wizard, or a princess in distress.

-The final part of the activity will be as a meeting where all the students present their own fairytale characters explaining why they chose that kind of character and some things about the story of it, for example when and where does he or she lives, in conclusion what does the story of this character is about.

-After know all the characters, the children will vote the five they like the most and the winners will have to make a little group representation about the story of these characters.

I hope you enjoy the activity and want to perform it in your practical period.

Thanks!!

  1. Hi Alejando, I have been Reading your post and I think it is interesting. As you say, this activity in which children have to create a character is interesting for many reasons.
In my opinión, it is interesting before read a fairytale to know what kind of characters we can find in it so with this activity we can explain and work in the different roles of the characters and know more about their function. ALso we can develop this activity before read the fairetale for work and go deep in a more complex way developing critical thinking with the students.
On the other hand, this activity could be interesting for know the personality of each children as you know carrying out an activity in which children have to identify their presonality with a specific character and their role in fairytales. With this activity we can take advantage of how is each of our students.
Other advantage that I can see it the development of their creativity when they have to create a character with all the aspects and personality of it and create their appearance. For develop this activity we have to scaffold children with the characteristics that they have to create.
In summary as you have said , create a fairytale character is an interesting and funny activity for do with children and also have many advantages to take into account.

    • Hi Alex!!
I have been reading your post, and i like your activity to do in our practical period to know more about the children.
I remember when we started with this topic in the class with Raquel, that you were very motivate to create your own fairytale character, and I can imagine that the children can have the same feelings like you! :)
There are many ways to know your students, but work with the fairytale character do maybe easier to know the students and also you can have many opportunities to develop this work.
We don’t know what we are going to do in class with our fairytale character but it will be an opportunity to know more about our classmate and also have a new activity to develop as a future teachers.
As a summary, fairytales character can be a tool very practical to do in class, the children can works by themselves, in pairs or groups and make it easier.

      Regards, Alvaro.

    • Hi Nuria!
      Thanks for commenting my post!
As you wrote and I think it too, is beter make this activity before reading a fairytale to go deeper in the critical thinking of our students, and also improve their creativity.
I am totally agreed with you that first of all we have to give them some scaffolding techniques to create their character.
I am grateful you like my post.
      Regards.
