Create a character

In this post I would like to talk about the importance of create a good character in literature. Today, in class, the group four have had the seminar hour. In this time we have been working on the different kinds of character in fairy tales and trying to find some of them in stories that we knew. We realize that it wasn´t difficult to relate it, because almost in every story we can find an elder, a true love couple, a helper or a villain. Each role has a concrete paper that develops in a way or another but normally the role is very similar. For example I have always found a similarity between Shrek and Donkey and Quixote and Sancho. I don´t know if it is the best example to explain what I mind but it´s something that I have in mind since I saw Shrek film. Even we can compare Fiona with Dulcinea, excuse me Dulcinea! ;)

Then we have done an activity in which we had to create our own character following the structure given by the teacher, Raquel. Here I start to think about that and, I´ve remembered that when I was a child I always wanted to be a super heroine, but I didn´t like the known super heroines like Catwoman or Storm, so I decided to invented a little super girl. She hasn´t got a name yet, because I´m still creating, but it will have one in a couple of hours. She is a normal girl, who goes to school and try to solve the daily problems of the school life.

I think this character it will be useful for children, because it´s really near to them and the problems are easy happened in the daily life of a normal student of primary education. I know that there are a lot of character similar to this one, but the special feature about mine it is that the truth is that she isn´t a really super heroine, but with her powerful imagination she wear her super heroine suit and fight bravely every day to rich victorious the 6th grade graduation.

I think when I finish the activity of create my character I will write a short story about it, because this project it made me think and I have lots of ideas related with my character adventures and experiences. So, if I had time, I will write some of them.

See you soon!! J

  1. Hello Yessica, I have read your post and I have to say that I liked a lot the activity as well, and what I really find interesting is how we can create subconscious connections between the characters of a story or a movie with us and our personalities.

Moreover, I consider that due to these connections we can analyze children´s minds and personalities by asking them to repeat the activity of creating a character, or by saying which is their favorite character of a film or a TV series.

In conclusion, my point is that this activity can be used to develop children´s creativity but it is also a good tool for the teacher, because it can be used to know indirectly their pupil´s personalities and even how children may behave with their partners depending of their characters and how their relation is during the story.

I hope you continue writing posts in the blog.

    Jaime

  2. Hi Jessica, great post. I want to start saying that the parallelism between Don Quixote and Sherk is also meaningful for me; I had the same sensation the first time that I saw Sherk.

I have decided comment on your post because I think your idea for the character is amazing. For me, it is important to create references for our students, and if we do it in a super-hero shape it is very motivating. Furthermore, make accessible heroes is a way to show our student that they can achieve their purposes.

Also when I read Jaime´s comment I have realized that the activity also can be useful for student. In my opinion we tend to create heroes to overcome our own problems, and in this way we can create closeness with the student´s reality.

Finally, if you lastly decided to create the story it would be great add it in the blog ;).

  3. Hi Yessica,
On the one hand, I never thought to compare Shrek and the donkey with Quixote and Sancho but because it never came to my mind. Now that you have mentioned they could be similar. I mean, in both cases the characters try to find the “girl”, so they face multiple adventures and take risks. I like how work your mind :P
On the other hand, I also wanted to be a superhero when I was a child. I loved the idea of flying and throwing powerful spells, rescuing people from villains and feeling myself proud and strong. However it was not my idea when we did the activity in class. I decided to be Pocahontas because this character makes me feel self-confident, kindness, intelligence… This character was, I think, the only princess in all Disney’s versions that rejected what she really wanted to carry out her life as she had to. This one could also be another type of super hero, couldn’t be?
I totally agree with you Yessica, your super hero could fit perfectly in nowadays children literacy. In my opinion, nowadays most of us need to feel a super hero very closed, even children need it, due to the closeness they transmit, the problems they pass throw, how they solve them… We can get involved into their daily life, and then we can feel how they cheer us up to “move mountains”.
    Greetings Yessica.
