An incursion in my life

Hello everyone! I hope you enjoy my post and make you reflect!

Reading is a very important aspect of our lives, it is a source of wisdom where people can walk through different paths and discover a lot of new things. It is said that reading is living a parallel life, in which you can escape from the real world to discover a new one.

There are a lot of types of books: photography, adventure, history, economy, children’s literature, and a long etcetera. But I want to talk about a special type that marked my life: comics.

When I was little, I did not like to read very much. It was a hard time for me and I hated when I had to read a book for school, because it used to take me a lot of time. Maybe from the beginning, I wanted to read something that I wanted, and not being told to read something without taking any decision. This might be the reason I did not like to read at all, and from then, I always wanted to read a book that had a lot of pictures. This way, I read what I wanted and I could look at the pictures. That is why I used to tell my dad that if I had to read a book I would choose a comic.

I used to read, or to look at comics of Tintin and Asterix and Obelix. Firstly, I started to look at all the pictures without reading the bubbles. However, after a long time, every night I took the books without no one that told me to take them, because little by little I was starting to read the texts and find them more interesting. At that time, I did not feel obligated and I discovered the first kind of books I really liked and wanted to read by myself.

I personally like them because now that I grew up, I remember a lot cultural things that I used to read with Tintin and Asterix and Obelix, like traditions, ways of living, geographical locations… of our country and different ones. It is a rich didactical resource for young children, and even for older ones.

Now that I reflect about it, I get the conclusion that you can offer a children a wide range of books to choose, and they can read the ones they most like, without making them feel pressured and uncomfortable. Also, children want to imitate adults all the time, so it is a really good thing to sit with them and enjoy discovering that parallel world!

  1. Hi Miguel Ángel!

I totally agree with you. Reading can make people live different experiences that cannot be lived in the real world.

In my opinion, books develop creativity because we have to imagine every situation, people or description books offer. If two people are reading the same book and you ask them about the pictures they have imagined, I’m sure both have different representations of the same description. That’s why I hate films taken from novels. You don’t need to imagine anything since the film gives you everything.

Coming back to the subject, reading is something people used to hate, but it gives us the opportunity to learn new vocabulary, develop our creativity, be involved in the magic world of literature, open our mental schemes or know more about different cultures.

However, teachers tend to give to students some compulsory books. But…what is the problem? People like you, Miguel, don’t like reading books and prefer reading comics, articles or maybe magazines. Why do you have to read books?

As future teachers and from my point of view, we have to let the students choosing the material they prefer to read. It doesn’t mind the resource they use, the important aspect is reading something they/we like. That way, reading is not going to be a difficult or boring task, but is going to be a really interesting and enjoyable affair.

  2. Hi Miguel Ángel!
I totally agree with you and with Carolina about reading and the experience that you can live if you read what you like.
As you, I didn’t like reading at school because I remember to have a big folder with 4 books that the publisher house of the language book makes me buy with the book, and I have to read them in the following 9 months and I was thinking about why I have to read those books and no others I can choose.
It is true that we have to make students read at early ages, because they have to develop their reading skill, but maybe we can do it better if they read what they want instead of what a group of psychologists or pedagogues from a publisher house said.
For that reason, I agree with you about offer a list of books to our students so they can choose the books they like to read, and don’t create on them a feeling of “I have to read at least 10 books, and if I don’t do it, I fail the subject”.

  3. Hi guys! Thank you very much for taking the time to read my post and reflect about it. There is one thing I really like, it is listening to others opinions, this way I can have more ideas or even get to some conclusions.
At least, now I know some people that think a little bit like me and will try to do the things as good as they can, thinking about them learning in their childhood and trying to improve what they have lived.
    Keep on sharing opinions!
